Facing the Challenge

It's not easy to face the prospect of dealing with cancer or blood diseases. But it's encouraging to note the progress that is being made everyday. With earlier detection, improved diagnostic techniques, and treatment breakthroughs, people with cancer are now living longer and fuller lives. The outcome for patients with blood diseases has greatly improved as well.

Patients are also discovering that they can empower themselves by learning about their disease and taking an active role in their care. But with so many sources of information - the media, friends, books, and the Internet - where should you turn? The best place to start is with your physicians, who specialize in oncology (the treatment of cancer) and hematology (the treatment of blood diseases). Your doctors and specially trained nurses will take the time to discuss your specific illness and treatment options. They will also direct you to appropriate educational material and support groups.

So take advantage of the support that's around you. The more informed you are, the stronger a partner you will be. And the more effective we will be as your caregiver.

The Complexities of Cancer

While we have turned the corner in the battle against cancer, it is still a serious and complex disease. For one thing, cancer isn't one disease, but many different diseases. And more, the same type of cancer may affect people differently.

Likewise, there are many different types of treatment for cancer, and no one course of treatment is right for everyone. Accordingly, it is best to design a treatment program that is tailored to your specific needs.

A Focus on Blood Diseases

At Commonwealth Hematology-Oncology, we also specialize in diseases of the blood, including malignant and non-malignant conditions.

We treat patients with various blood diseases, including anemia, bleeding or clotting disorders, bone marrow diseases, lymphatic diseases, and immune system disorders.
